Moraine Assembly
Morain Assembly ("the truck and bus plant") is one of the 5 GM plants that closed in the Dayton area as the company went bankrupt. HBO documented the closing of Moraine in The Last Truck. (review) It is a testament of the blue collar, American middle class. My dad devoted most of his life working for GM as an engineer. As a kid, I remember going through plants and labs looking at the models of new cars and technology being created at the height of the American auto industry. Driving past this plant tonight was a reminder that a great industry can fail. The GM logos and signs have been removed. The rail yard once full of cars sits eerily empty. With an epic past there is hope for an epic future. It’s rumored that Moraine Assembly could be converted into a passenger rail factory to help suppor President Obama’s rail initiative. One day I hope to see the rail yards full again.
